Adequate Yearly Progress Federal Report (AYP Report) Spring Branch Middle School Notes
You may find the full SBMS AYP report, along with all other schools referenced in this document at:

For the purposes of this report, we have created a comparison campus group made up of similar West Houston Middle Schools. This Campus Group follows..
Campus Group:
Spring Branch ISD: Spring Branch Middle School Spring Forest Middle School Spring Oaks Middle School
Cy-Fair ISD: Arnold Middle School Labay Middle School
Katy ISD: Katy Jr. High Mayde Creek Jr. High
Houston ISD: Grady Middle School Lanier Middle School
Campus Group Rationale:
The campuses in this created group are all well-known West Houston Middle Schools that share similar characteristics - they are all in large, urban districts; they are all approximately the same size; and they all have similar racial make-ups. (With the exception of Spring Oaks Middle School and Grady Middle School, which are high functioning middle schools with higher minority populations than SBMS). Also, a check was done of all the West Houston districts represented - HISD, SBISD, CFISD, and KISD - these are all the known schools that exist in these districts that share marked similarities with Spring Branch Middle School regarding approximate size and racial make-up.
Notes on AYP regarding our actual scores of students coded "White, non-Hispanic:"
All of our scores either beat or matched all of the scores from all the schools listed above. This is true both in 2002 and 2003. The also meet or beat the state average in all areas.
Notes on AYP regarding our actual scores of students coded Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged, and/or Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Students:
Unfortunately, all our scores are lower than all grouped school scores in both math and reading except in one area: Our LEP scores are better than Arnold Middle in Cy-Fair, and both Katy ISD Schools. Note - we are "close, but no cigar" in many testing areas compared to the other grouped campuses. The comparison with the state averages is a mixed bag - we exceed the state in about half the tested areas regarding these sub-pops, and drop somewhat below the state average in approximately the other half of the tested areas. Check the web report if you are interested in seeing exactly how close we are.
That said; let's turn to another set of data surrounding the scores:
\Notes on AYP regarding the improvement gap from '02 to '03 surrounding Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged, and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Students:
Important: The "improvement gap from '02 to '03" is defined as the point spread between last year's score and this year's score. Regarding Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged, and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students in every area, on every test, we closed the spread. The following statistics show how much we closed the spread in relation to the schools in the created group..
We beat the state average on EVERY test regarding the improvement gap from '02 to '03.
We beat EVERY school in this group in EVERY reading category regarding the improvement gap from '02 to '03.
We beat all schools but Grady and Labay in EVERY math area regarding the improvement gap from '02 to '03.
SBMS beat every school in this campus group in every performance category regarding the improvement gap from '02 to '03, with two exceptions: Grady Middle School in HISD beat us in all sub-pop categories in math, and Labay Middle School in Cy-Fair beat us in LEP Math and Econ. Dis. Math (with SBMS beating Labay in Hispanic scores in the math area).
Furthermore, we are within two points of Grady and Labay in all math categories but LEP, where we are only four and six points away regarding the improvement gap from '02 to '03. This places us firmly in the ballpark of the Grady and Labay scores, even though they bettered us in most math areas. (Remember, we beat them both in all Reading Score areas).
Thus, we made up an incredible amount of ground last year, but our scores are still below the large majority of scores in this group. We are committed to seeing our scores further increase this year.
Further notes regarding the SBMS AYP report:
Notes on AYP attendance data:
The reported AYP attendance data is two to three years old. There is no attendance data reported for last year, the 2002-03 school year. SBMS had a significant improvement in attendance during the 2002-03 school year.
Notes on AYP Participation:
We stand toe to toe with each and every school in the group in all participation areas. The only area in which we are slightly faulted is Sp. Ed. Reading participation, and in that area we garner a 94.6% participation rate, whereas the other schools in the group score a full 95% or above (noted on the report as >95%). This small difference is noted in the comment "Needs Improvement - Reading" found at the bottom of the report. This note regarding the small drop from 95% to 94.6% sp. ed. participation rate is the only negative note on the Spring Branch Middle School Report.
