Shauna Shaw is the Director of the SBMS Orchestra. She is a product of Spring Branch ISD Orchestra Programs where she began her violin studies at Spring Oaks Middle School and continued on to Spring Woods High School. Under the direction of Barbara Corkins and violinist Harold Clyde Hess (after whom our district's High School Orchestra Hess Awards are named), Ms. Shaw was one of many students who benefitted from the magnificent opportunities offered by their mature string pedagogy. Ms. Shaw was a member of the SBISD District Orchestra that traveled and performed in European countries. During high school, Ms. Shaw auditioned into the Texas Region Orchestra all four years and into the Texas State Orchestra her sophomore, junior, and senior years. To begin her teacher training, Ms. Shaw then attended the University of Houston and continued to study violin with Fredell Lack and Al Muenzer, and Lawrence Wheeler. She taught private lessons, assisted local school orchestras, performed in many local orchestras for holiday productions, played for recording sessions, and earned her Bachelor of Music Education Degree, culminating in an all-level, all-discipline music certification. Her student teaching included assisting the Northbrook Middle School Orchestra Director, Sherrill Hannish Calvert, student teaching general music at Hollibrook Elementary with Karen O'Conner and Mrs. Adair, assisting the Northbook High School and Spring Woods High School Orchestra Directors, Barbara Corkins and Sherrill Hannash Calvert, and teaching at one of HISD's magnet schools, Parker Elementary School. Currently, Ms. Shaw enjoys performing in Houston and in Austin for weddings, parties and in local orchestras, and she still makes time for teaching a handful of private violin and viola students. When she is not busy with the SBMS orchestra, she judges for local competitions and teaches clinics to prepare students for auditions and contests.
Ms. Shaw's goal in teaching is to encourage students to believe in their self worth, to know how great their potential is, to know what a gift they are to the world, and to never give up on their dreams, and of course, to love music throughout their life.
